Plutarch · c. AD 46-after 119
Plutarch's Life of Sulla follows Lucius Cornelius Sulla, a Roman of patrician family whose ancestors had become obscure, from his youth and service as quaestor to Marius to his dictatorship and death from disease. It covers his rivalry with Marius, his war against Mithridates in Greece, including the siege of Athens and the battles of Chaeroneia and Orchomenus, the peace at Dardanus, the civil war in Italy, the proscriptions, and his last years. It is paired with the Life of Lysander, and the Comparison of Lysander and Sulla follows as its last section.
