Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters or Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Sea of monsters is a fantasy film directed by Thor Freudenthal and originally released in 2013. It is the second film in the series Percy Jackson, based on the novel by the same name. The cast includes names such as Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario and Stanley Tucci.
The events of the film follow those of the first film Percy Jackson: the Lightning Thief 2010. The film starts with Percy telling the story of Thalia and her sacrifice; Annabeth, Luke, Grover and Thalia were trying to escape from monsters, when Thalia decided to sacrifice herself, so the rest could safely escape. Thalia's father, the god Zeus, transformed her into a pine tree and then created a magical protective border around the camp where the others had found refuge. Later, a Colchis Bull managed to cross the border and attack the camp, but was successfully repelled by Percy. Luke then appeared and unsuccessfully tried to convert Percy to his side, and then disappeared.
Realising that Thalia's tree was tainted by Luke and would no longer protect the camp, the group was told that the Golden Fleece had the power of healing anything, and that they should find it to heal the tree. An expedition was organised to retrieve the fleece, during which the group was kidnapped by Luke's helpers, though they successfully escaped afterwards. They were then swallowed by the fearsome monster Charybdis, but they devised a plan and managed to escape the monster's stomach. After a confrontation and successful escape from Polyphemus, Luke appeared and demanded the fleece from Percy, who refused to hand it over. Luke started reviving Kronos, and later tried to grab the fleece from Percy; although he initially managed to take it, he was then attacked by Tyson. Meanwhile, Kronos was revived and ate Luke and Grover, and he then attacked Percy. Percy managed to kill Kronos and return him to his sacrophagus, in the same time regurgitating Luke and Grover. However, Annabeth was attacked and killed by the Manticore, which was later slain by the group.
The group returned to the camp, and using the power of the Golden Fleece, not only was Thalia healed but also returned to her human form. Percy realised that since Thalia was also Zeus' child, she may also have been a possible child that might have the power of preserving or destroying Olympus. At the end of the film, Kronos' sarcophagus was shown glowing, implying that Kronos was not completely dead but might return.
The film received mixed reviews, but was a commercial success. There have been no reports as to whether a third film in the series will be made.
