Lucian of Samosata

Λουκιανός

c. AD 125-after 180

Lucian of Samosata on the Euphrates, born about AD 125, was a Syrian who became a travelling lecturer in Greek and one of the great satirists of antiquity. His dialogues and lectures treat the gods, heroes and philosophers of Greek tradition with open mockery, and because he retells so many myths in order to ridicule them they are a rich, if irreverent, source for the stories the poets told, from the loves of Zeus to the judgement of Paris and the underworld of the Greek imagination.
