Nonnus of Panopolis

Νόννος ὁ Πανοπολίτης

5th century AD

Nonnus came from Panopolis in Egypt and wrote in Greek in the fifth century AD. His Dionysiaca, in forty-eight books, is the longest surviving epic of antiquity and the fullest ancient telling of the life of Dionysos, from the birth of the god to his ascent to Olympos. It is also a rich store of late myth: the rape of Europa, the story of Cadmos and Harmonia, the death of Pentheus, Ariadne, Phaethon and the war against the Indians.
