Bacchylides

Βακχυλίδης

c. 520 – c. 450 BC

Bacchylides of Ceos, nephew of Simonides, was a rival of Pindar at the court of Hieron of Syracuse. His victory odes (epinicians) and dithyrambs were lost until 1896, when most of them came to light on a papyrus from Egypt. They tell myths of Heracles, Meleager, Theseus, Io and Idas in a clear, vivid style.
