early 2nd century AD (Alexandria)
Ptolemy, son of Hephaestion, called Chennus, was an Alexandrian grammarian of the early second century AD. His New History, a work in seven books of curious learning, is lost; we know it only from the summary made by the patriarch Photius in the ninth century (Bibliotheca, codex 190). The summary shows a collector of oddities who gave rival versions of myths, invented "explanations" of epithets, and often named his sources.
