43 BC - AD 17/18
Publius Ovidius Naso, born at Sulmo in 43 BC, was the last of the great Augustan poets. He wrote love elegy (the Amores, the Ars Amatoria), the Fasti on the Roman calendar, and the Metamorphoses, the most complete surviving store of Greek and Roman myth in a single poem. In AD 8 Augustus banished him to Tomis on the Black Sea, where he wrote the Tristia and the Epistulae ex Ponto and died.
