1st century BC to 2nd century AD
Two Latin handbooks of Greek myth and astronomy are transmitted under the name of Hyginus: the Fabulae, a collection of short mythological narratives, genealogies and lists, and the De astronomia, an account of the constellations and their stories. Ancient tradition ascribes a Hyginus to the age of Augustus, a freedman and librarian of the Palatine library, but the works as we have them are of uncertain authorship and probably date from the second century AD. They are valued because they preserve versions of Greek myths, many from lost tragedies and Hellenistic poems, that are known nowhere else.
