[Eratosthenes]

[Ἐρατοσθένης]

attributed to Eratosthenes of Cyrene (c. 276–194 BC); the transmitted text is a later epitome

The Catasterismi (‘Placings among the Stars’) is a short prose handbook of the myths behind the constellations that the manuscripts ascribe to Eratosthenes of Cyrene, the third-century BC scholar and geographer. The work we have is an epitome of uncertain date and hand, not Eratosthenes's own text, and editors therefore write his name in square brackets. It pairs each constellation's myth with a count of its stars, and preserves versions of stories that are otherwise little known.
