The Story of Pandora’s Box

Pandora was the first woman, created by the gods and given to Epimetheus a punishment to Prometheus for stealing scared fire and giving it to man. Pandora had with her a jar (more commonly depicted as a box – hence the name of the myth; Pandora’s Box) which she was warned not to open, but out of curiosity she did and let out all manner of evil which spread out across the world. She closed the lid as quickly as possible, but everything had escaped except hope. In another version (which makes more sense to me personally) the jar did not contain bad things, but good things which humanity would have been able to keep if the jar had not been opened. As hope was the last thing remaining in the jar, it was the only gift remaining from the god for humanity to keep.

I have depicted here Pandora as the Protector of Hope, as for all the bad that happened as a result of her curiosity getting the better of her, she did manage to save hope for humanity. At the dawning of a new day, she stands watches over the greatest of gifts – Hope.
