Afrodite Picture

Afrodite is from Greek mythology. She is the goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and procreation. Her Roman equivalent is the goddess Venus.

In the ancient times Afrodites name came from a greek word afros, that means foam. Strange name comes from Hesiods poems, about the origin of Afrodite. Titan called Cronus castrated his father Uranus and from his genitals leaked a foam into the sea. The sea deity Thalattan got pregnant of Afrodite and gave birth to her.

Hesiod says that goddess is called also Filomeides, that means smiling girl or girl that loves to smile. Because Hesiod likes to play with words, it's not odd that only changing one letter from Filomeides to Filomeedes means "Lover of genitals".
