Daphne's Flight Picture

This piece was submitted as an assignment in a "Photography as Art" class requiring us to portray a religious or mythological theme. I chose the episode from Ovid’s Metamorphoses as a love-struck Apollo chases Daphne (who is fleeing Apollo’s unwanted affections) through a forest. The story continues as she nears the banks of Peneus, her father-river, and cries for her father to help her. Peneus then completes the transformation as Apollo stands mortified as his love becomes a laurel tree for all eternity. In this photograph, I captured the moment as she half-turns towards Apollo right before she begins her transformation into the laurel tree.
