Leshyi Picture

In Slavic Mythology, Leshyi (лешый) were wood demons. They were trickster-like spirits who were the lords of the wood and were extremely powerful. According to legend, they had cloven feet, massive horns and wild, glowing eyes like those of cats. On their backs they wore furs, usually those of wolves with which they were affiliated, or bearskin. They also had goat tails, but mine has one of a dragon. (змей) Since they were the masters of the wood they often carried clubs or whips to show their dominance.

They played music and led travelers astray, trapping and then tickling them to death. Mysterious whoops, cackles and howls were often sourced to the Leshyi, who loved scaring the unwary.
