Human Name: Sonia Tepes (ソニア。ツェペシュ, Sonia Tsepeshu)

Human Age: 19

Gender: Female

Birthday: December 1

Height: 165 cm (5'5)

Weight: 140lb

Personality and Interests: Due to being bullied, beaten and conquered at a young age Romania is highly strung and snaps at others as a form of instinct and retaliation; she usually maintains an aloof persona around countries and has been noted to create a cold atmosphere along with whispering “răni” (stab) when angered (a habit she picked up from her grandmother); another trait is her ability to hold long grudges, silently plotting demise. Romania is very proud of her long history, culture and people, and will defend ably whenever someone talks ill of them in her presence. She is well known for her brutal, bloody past as well as her love for torture, especially impalement. Although violent when provoked Romania has since become more calm and stoic. She tends to be overly possessive and obsessive when it comes to things that she cares about or that intrigue interest; an example being her motives in war are only to reclaim stolen land; another example being she became interested with England’s culture and wished to taste his blood. Romania usually hate’s to fight in wars and tends to stay neutral; leading her to usually be captured and pressured by other countries to join forces. She loves to play the violin along with other arts such as sculpturing and architecture. Romania also has a strong love for mythology as she has taken part in witchcraft, rituals and fortune telling. She is always seen eating sunflower seeds as she states they help “calm her nerves”, Romania also enjoys wines and likes to eat Amandine (chocolate sponge cake with almond cream). Although most of the time considered a ‘shut-in’ Romania loves all types’ wildlife but she is mostly a dog person; when outside Romania likes to climb trees and watch the clouds, doing this makes her feel truly at peace.

Pet/s: Romania owns a grey wolf cub named Vârcolac. Vârcolac represents Romania’s mythology. He/she is known to be mischievous and playful, finding enjoyment in scaring other countries with his/her bone chilling howl and trying to bite their necks. He/she loves to eat and has a very huge appetite (reference to the folktale that Vârcolac’s occasionally swallow the moon and the sun, and are thus responsible for eclipses). Vârcolac’s gender is unknown however it has been suggested he/she is male due to becoming jealous and protective when Romania spends time with the male countries. Romania also owns a small black kitten named Prevestire (also known a Romaniacat by the other cats). She shares similar personality traits with her master; including a interest towards Greece's cat. The supertitions that surround her have caused both postitive and negative attention. Romaniacat is considered quite intelligent as she has learnt how lo use tarot cards.

.Grandfather - Ancient Rome
.Grandmother - Dacia
.Brother/s - Moldova and Bulgaria
.Half-brother - Russia
.Half-sister - Ukraine
.Half-cousin/s - N.Italy, S.Italy

Curl: Romania's curl has been with her since an early age; repeatedly changing to represent the invasion of the Ottoman Empire, her battles over the ownership of Transylvania and recently the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina. It has been suggested her curl may also function as a 'erogenous zone'; evidence being Romania became somewhat flustered when it was curiously touched by Greece when he noticed it had changed.

.Moldova - Relations with Moldova are a special case considering that the two countries practically share the same language, and a fairly common historical background. A movement for unification of Romania and Moldova appeared in the early 1990s after both countries achieved emancipation from communist rule, but faded away in the mid-1990s when Moldova pursued an agenda towards preserving his independence. Romania remains interested in Moldovan affairs and wishes to assist and care for him in a motherly fashion. When in trouble Romania always allies with him and displays deep affection for him, being the complete opposite of her normal demeanour (in which freaks out the other countries). But like all siblings the two countries tend to have petty arguments and have been unable even to reach agreement on a small number of topics.

.Bulgaria - Bulgarian relations with Romania featured regular visits to each other; the two usually talk about their love of wine and architecture. Romanian-Bulgarian relations are developing "very intensively" because of EU accession, since Romania and Bulgaria joined together the European Union in 2007. Romania and Bulgaria have never had any serious conflicts, other than a territorial dispute over the Dobruja region in 1913-1940, ended with the Craiova Treaty and now largely forgotten.

.Serbia - Romanian and Serbia have historically good relations. Although not genetically related in a way their relationship is that of a brother/sister one. There has not been single war between the two and there is no bad blood between them.

.Ukraine - Although the two share some relations they rarely interact due to Romania’s dislike towards Russia. Ukraine tends to get stuck in the middle of Romania’s and Russia’s arguments.

.Russia - Out of all her relationships Romania’s relationship with her half-brother Russia is the most difficult to define. Through the times it has been a rocky relationship, their history is filled with conflict and bloodshed due to Russia wanting to control Romania, on numerous times he has threatened her if she continues to be friends with China and Ukraine in which Romania bites back stating she can be friends with whoever she wants to be friends with. The two openly share dislike towards each other but Russia still insists she can still ‘become one’ with him, when saying this to her Romania becomes highly aggressive and has to be restrained by the other countries. Even though they fight Romania is thankful to Russia with helping her break away from the Ottoman Empire but she would never admit this.

.Austria - Romania’s relation with Austria seem to be continuously on and off. Austria was the first country to recognized and congratulate Romania's independence from Turkey; this made Romania happy that her hard work was being praised and so she wished to create a friendship with Austria as she wanted to learn more about art from him. However the relations were soon when Romania declared war on Austria-Hungary, entering the First World War. After the war the diplomatic relations were resumed, this time with Austria proper, due to the dissolution of the Austria-Hungary Empire. The relations were suspended again, few days before the anexation of Austria by Germany (Anschluss). Relations resumed two years after Austria's secession from Germany.

.Germany - Romania does believe Germany’s leadership skills are impressive; however their relationship is neutral, nothing more and nothing less. Romania is still considerably angry at Germany for taking all her resources during WW2 and not paying her back along with the massacre of her people. She wishes he had not involved her with WW2 as it has caused great troubles for her country.

.Italy - Although the two stayed under the residence of the Roman Empire for a short period of time it seems they do not remember each other. Upon joining the Axis Powers in WW2 it could be said that relations grew but it is unclear as Romania kept to herself.

.Japan - Japan has been traditionally enjoying cordial relations with Romania since their first diplomatic contact. A series of cultural events were held in both Japan and Romania to commemorate the anniversary of the century-long relationship between the two countries. The anniversary was highlighted when the two countries visited each other. The Japanese culture is widely accepted with much interest by Romania, and thus it is often the case that Japanese cultural events always receive much appreciation and reputation. Romania loves the simplistic beauty and nature of the Japanese landscapes and is proud her culture is popular among Japanese media (e.g. vampire/werewolf themed manga’s and anime’s). Out of the Axis members Romania enjoyed talking to Japan the most due to his polite manner and philosophical way of thinking as well as his love for animals and sense of solitude.

.France - Due to influencing her culture Romania had high respect and even idolised France when she was younger, they were considered close allies and France would usually call Romania “Little Paris” as a cute nickname. However since WW1 the relationship spiralled downwards when France pressured her to join the war; which ended in disaster for Romania as the Central Powers conquered two-thirds of the country and defeated her army within months. During WW2 Romania became fully aware of Frances perverted nature as he complimented on how more “curvaceous” she had become since they last met. At the end of the war France did not even recognize her role in defeating the Axis Powers; this both shocked and angered Romania so she stated at that moment she “lost all respect for that dirty old man”. Overtime the relationship has seemed to rebuild again but she tends to get annoyed when France lectures not to be friends with England and America.

.England - Romania and England have established a positive relationship and are on good terms even though England’s cooking nearly killed Vârcolac, Romania was attacked when she visited Northern Ireland (something England feels very guilty about) and when they first met Romania gained an obsession with wanting to taste England’s blood after he received a paper cut. Romania enjoys listening to England’s history and culture; the two share a common interest of the art of magic; their sixth sense allows them to see each other’s “imaginary friends”; both where shocked to see how their creatures contrasted with themselves, such as the serious England has cute, child-like creatures and the innocent-looking Romania has terrifying, vicious creatures.

.America - Similar to England Romania and America stand on good terms with their alliance. Although she wishes he was not so loud (she had had restrain herself not to impale him on a number of occasions) Romania enjoys America visiting her as he also loves to eat Amandine. From the stories England used to tell him about Romania’s creatures when he was younger America is extremely enthusiastic when it comes to her scary mythology and is always asking her for advice on how to make his Halloween celebrations even scarier. America finds Romania’s quirkiness interesting and enjoys their friendship because she reminds him of England (on one occasion when America saw her preforming a ritual he freaked out, calling her a witch and tried to throw her down a well). Upon a conversation about their pasts after hearing Romania’s battle of survival America has promised to be her hero and come to her rescue whenever she is in trouble.

.China - China and Romania have a strong friendship. China and Romania have been always supporting each other on international affairs and domestic development. The two share many common interests such as their love for the taste of pork, being very superstitious, mythical creatures, love for animals and their acrobatic skills. When Romania used to suffer from stress China became worried and assisted by showing her relaxation methods. China loves to hug Vârcolac finding his/her stubbornness adorable. They have always sympathized with and supported each other, an example being when Romania suffered serious floods, China provided Romania with aid. They frequently visit each other’s houses and enjoy each other’s differing cultures. China has always showed Romania brotherly affection such as during the Cold War when Russia threatened to invade Romania, China became very protective of her and so threatened Russia.

.Greece - Romania and Greece have what many would call a questionable relationship, such to be expected after knowing each other for several centuries. They both share a decent amount of history, mostly being ruled by the Ottoman Empire for roughly the same amount of time, and being allies during the second Balkan War and having a peaceful relationship all throughout history. Currently, he is among the top three investors to Romania. Since a young age and during their time under the Ottoman Empire when scared of worried Romania would always hold Greece’s hand for comfort or a sense of security. It has been noted Greece and only a handful of other countries have brought out Romania’s softer side. It is not un-common to see the two visiting each other’s countries creating a relaxed atmosphere; Romania tends to get drowsy from Greece’s weather and ends up falling asleep with her head resting on his shoulder and so they like to take naps under the warm sun. The two share the same thought of being reincarnated as animals for the chance of freedom and true happiness. Greece shares a similar interest of his countries heritage and history; a topic that is often brought up between them during their free time. Even though the two have known each other for a long time Romania still becomes embarrassed when Greece talks about sexual activity in their conversations and she sometimes wonders what he is trying to imply when he repeatedly tells her that his countries sex frequency is the highest in the world. Anything beyond a friendly relationship is debatable although Romania herself tries to deny anything other than friendship however she tends to get flustered at the thought of them being together like that.

.Turkey - When Romania was younger she often feared Turkeys towering height and mask thinking of him more like a monster than a person. However as she grew older her boldness and rebellious side rose she soon lost her petty fear for the good of her country so she could break free of the Ottoman Empire and gain her independence. Despite the rocky past that these two had with the Ottoman invasion and the coup d'état the two countries have ceased fire. Unlike Greece Romania tries to avoid conflict with Turkey who usually teases her in a big brother fashion about being vampire-like traits or calls her an ungrateful brat for breaking away from the Ottoman Empire, Romania basically ignores this by giving him a stoic face and telling him to leave what happened in the past to rest “let sleeping dog lie”. Romania tends to be the one to break up the fights between Greece and Turkey before they get violent; in the end she is the one who has to patch them up if they get hurt, thinking that they are both foolish but entertaining to be around.

.Hungary - To be basic the two fight like cats and dogs. A lot of their animosity seems to stem from the constant territorial struggles they’ve had over Transylvania in the past more than anything else. In recent years it would seem they have become much more gentler towards each other as Hungary contribution with helping Romania into the EU and so Romania signed and ratified a basic bilateral treaty with Hungary that settled outstanding disagreements, laying the foundation for closer, more cooperative relations.

History of Romania reveals a continuous long fight of Romania’s survival: an individual survival as a human being, as well as a nation survival. In which Romania won. The ancestor of Romania was known as Dacia, a fierce warrior who was conquered by the Roman Empire; after her defeat Dacia suffered from the loss of pride and so vanished without a trace leaving Roman Empire to raise Romania (named at the time Wallachia). Soon after Roman Empire died she was left to fend for herself and so became vulnerable to the attacks of other countries. Dark Age memories of Romania’s history were a very stormy time, as she fought numerous wars; her identity developed gradually. Over time Romania wished to form the feudal states of Transylvania, herself and Moldavia; however the Hungarian Kingdom occupied Transylvania making it one of her provinces. Upon centuries of fighting against Turkey, Romania was ensnared and made part of the Ottoman Empire. With the help of Russia the countries Serbia, Greece and Romania started a coup d'état for their independence. With winning results, not only freeing themselves from Turkey, but Romania also succeeded to unite the three provinces in a single country.
When World War I broke out, Romania declared neutrality. Two years later, under pressure from the Allies (especially France, desperate to open a new front), Romania joined the Allies, declaring war on Austria-Hungary. For this action, under the terms of the secret military convention, she was promised support for its goal of national unity for all Romanian people. The Romanian military campaign ended in disaster for Romania as the Central Powers conquered two-thirds of the country and defeated its army within months. Nevertheless, Moldavia remained in Romanian hands after the invading forces were stopped. By the war's end, Austria-Hungary and the Russian Empire had collapsed and disintegrated; Bessarabia, Bukovina and Transylvania united with the Kingdom of Romania.
During the Second World War, Romania tried again to remain neutral, but she received a Soviet ultimatum with an implied threat of invasion in the event of non-compliance. Under Nazi and Soviet pressure, Romania was forced to retreat from Bessarabia as well from northern Bukovina to avoid war. This, in combination with other factors, prompted her to join the Axis. Thereafter, southern Dobruja was ceded to Bulgaria, while Hungary received Northern Transylvania as result of an Axis arbitration. Within months, Romania had crushed the Iron Guard, and the subsequent year she entered the war on the side of the Axis powers. During the war, Romania was the most important source of oil for Nazi Germany, which attracted multiple bombing raids by the Allies. By means of the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union, Romania recovered Bessarabia and northern Bukovina from the Soviet Russia. Disgusted by Germany’s actions towards her own people, Romania changed sides and joined the Allies. But its role in the defeat of Nazi Germany was not recognized by the Peace Conference made by France; this has caused tension between the two contraries since Romanian suffered 170,000 casualties after switching sides. At the Paris Peace Treaty at the end of World War II Northern Transylvania returned to Romania, but Bessarabia, northern Bukovina and southern Dobruja were not recovered. After a short revival, the WWII not only destroyed Romania, but also put her under the power of Russia.
The Romanian communism was established which lasted for 45 years leaving behind a lot of bleeding scares in Romania’s life. While staying with Russia Romania was put under strict repression, financial drainage, abuse and incidents involving torture. The pain drove her to rebel and create the Romanian Revolution, the bloodiest communism removal in history.
Since December 1989, Romania has pursued a policy of strengthening relations with the West in general, more specifically with America and the European Union. She joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) on 29 March 2004, the European Union (EU) on 1 January 2007, while Romania had joined the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in 1972, and is a founding member of the World Trade Organization. Over time Romania more frequently visited western countries and vice versa.
