Narcissus was a hunter, renowned for his exquisite beauty, son of a river god and a nymph. Another nymph, Echo, fell in love with him when he was walking through the forest one day and tried to approach him but could only repeat his own words. When she revealed herself to him and tried to embrace him, he refused her and she ran off, spending the rest of her days pining for him until all that was left of her was her voice, repeating words caught on the wind. Nemesis, the goddess of revenge, heard of the story and attracted him to the edge of a pond, making him look into the water. Having never seen his reflection before, he became awestruck and could not leave the pond, having fallen in love with his own reflection. He ended up wasting away, pining for the beauty who would not return his affection, and turned into the flower Narcissus.Continue Reading: Nemesis
