Sandman 3 - Concept Picture

I created this collector's edition of Sandman as part of a typography project for college. It includes outer packaging, a concertina booklet and 2 hardbound volumes containing the entire comic series.

Conceptually speaking, the typographic design represents transition, the passage of time and change. The main piece, a foldout concertina booklet, begins with a minimal design and progresses to complete anarchy by the tenth page, with typographic backdrops, treatments and textures used to represent the overall change and, also, to echo the 1,000 word narrative that runs throughout.

The narrative becomes more uncomfortable as it progresses, but retains legibility throughout. Other elements are not designed to be legible, although many can be decoded. It's the deconstruction of these background messages that further adds intrigue to the piece.
