Love of the Sea Picture

Inspired by the Pirates of the Carribbean's character, Calypso, and the goddess in Greek Mythology .

From Pirates of the Carribbean...
She was the Goddess of the Sea. Davy Jones fell in love with her. She gave him the task of guiding the spirits of the dead lost at sea and Jones accepted the task out of love for her. As reward, Jones could have one day every 10 years ashore with his love, Calypso. And when that day finally came, she was nowhere to be found. After this betrayal, Jones cut out his own heart and made a secret agreement with the Pirate Lords. He showed them how to bind her to human form. Her binding tamed the seas and satisfied Jones's desire for vengeance.

From Mythology....
When Odysseus was shipwrecked and washed up on the shore of Ogygia during his voyage home, Calypso fell in love with him. She kept him on the island for seven years and offered him eternal life and youth if he would remain with her forever. However, Odysseus yearned to return home to see his wife, from whom he had been separated for a long time. Zeus took pity on the hero and sent Hermes with an order for Calypso to release him. She agreed and gave Odysseus supplies for his voyage. Legend says that she bore him at least one son.

From both stories, Calypso was betrayed by love. I tried showing her feelings of this through the weather in the sea. Her heart locket is a symbal of the love she had. I didn't want to make her appearance similar in any way to that of Tia Dalma in POTC. I designed a look of my own for her based on the idea of her being an "beautiful ocean nymphe" as described in mythology.
