In Greek mythology, Persephone the maiden goddess of spring and queen of the underworld, was the daughter of the harvest-goddess Demeter. As a young goddess Persephone was abducted by Hades, the God of the Underworld, after she visited his realm and was tricked into eating pomegranate seeds. (the fruit of the underworld) For each seed she ate, Persephone is trapped a month in Hade's realm. This is where we get our seasons as her mother Demeter, briefed at her daughters absents, refuses to let anything to grow or warmth to reach the earth during her time spent underground causing fall and winter to emerge.
