Flags of Touhou: Eirin Yagokoro Picture

This is my design of a flag for Eirin Yagokoro, one of the possible stage 6 bosses of Touhou 8: Imperishable Night. She is a Lunarian, a member of a race of people who settled on the moon. However, her character is most likely based on the Shinto god Ame no Yagokoro Omoikane no Mikoto (天八意思兼命). Eirin (永琳) is written with the characters for "eternity" and "jewel," while Yagokoro (八意) literally translates to "eight minds."

1. Another Nordic cross, but appropriate given the design of her clothes. Red represents servitude, as she is an attendent to the exiled Lunar princess, Kaguya Houraisan. Blue represents intelligence, the same her surname does. Eirin is also a exceptional pharmacist, to the point of being able to cure essentially any illness or disease. Black represents space, and her lunar origins. White represents wisdom.

2. The cross in this flag represents the bow and arrow (the horizontal bar is the arrow, the vertical one is the string of the bow). In her character portrait, Eirin holds a bow in her right hand and an arrow in her left. The bow and arrow held in this manner is a symbol of wisdom in Tibetan Buddhism.

3. Along the length of the cross are the eight trigrams (the bagua) of Taoism. At the intersection of the cross is the trigram representing heaven and sky, which is repeated along the width of the cross. The trigrams appear lining the bottom hem of Eirin's clothes.

4. Upper left portion is charged with the caduceus, the staff carried by Hermes in Greek mythology. It is mistakenly confused with the Rod of Ascelpius as a symbol of medicine, while in actuality it is a symbol for commerce. Both interpretations work for Eirin, as she does run a pharmacy after all.
