some 'wow this is way too serious for me' symbolism:
This was a concentration piece drawn as a homage to the Neoclassical art (prominently, David’s work) of the late 18th century—the figure is meant to be a greco-roman subject: Hermes. Revolution, and specifically the mercurial French Revolution—what I perceive to be one of the most important events in history—is strongly emphasized as well. Hermes here is meant to be a messenger of death, enlightenment, and change—hence the delta triangle disrupting the circle of unity in the background. The laurels on the figure’s helmet and his general appearance are also a small indications of Napoleon’s later rise to power, and the Antichrist myth of re-conquering the ‘Roman Empire.’
