Hades and Persephone Picture

Last entry for the September EMTC hosted by =SparklyDest. Theme: Seasons! [link] Wanted to make sure the contest got to 15 entries!

I am actually happy I went ahead and did this. When I first heard this theme, the idea I wanted to run with was the story of Hades and Persephone. In mythology, this is the tale that explains the seasons.

In a nutshell, Persephone and her goddess mother, Demeter, controlled the fertility of the earth (plants, flowers, etc.) Hades, the god of the underworld, fell in love with Persephone and whisked her off to the underworld with him. In her absence, the trees and plants withered and there was famine. Finally, Zeus forced Hades to return Persephone to earth. Before she came back, she had eaten of the fruit of the underworld and as a result had to return there for a period of time each year. So, during the times she was on earth, everything bloomed and was fruitful, and the times she returned to Hades, everything wilted and winter came. Thus, the seasons.

I had originally wanted to do a large animation showing the trees fading and such when Persephone left and coming to life when she returned. But, I instead decided to run with my other contest idea; there was no time to do both full-length animations. Still, I loved the idea of this emote and decided just to depict Hades pulling Persephone away (though according to the rules, the seasons should be prominent, but in this case, the piece itself represents the whole myth of how the seasons came about, so I hope it squeeks by). I think the piece works well static.

I really didn't know how I wanted to design Hades, but I didn't like the typical depictions of him as being just a beefcake, normal-looking man. I didn't want to go the route of the Disney Hades either. I ended up modifying one of my WoW emotes and I think is pretty much how I initially imagined him.
