I've had a weakness for the story of Orpheus and Eurydice for years. Many other picture of them show the couple during *the* moment in Hades - but what I like so especially much about their story is Orpheus' big love to his wife, so I wanted to show them in a happy, peaceful moment before all the pain began.

We hear that a mariage out of love is a rather new invention, for a long time people married mostly out of "practical" reasons. And women were considered more or less as low-life for a long time, too. But I guess I can't have been just that black and white when there are old stories like the one of Orpheus and Eurydice as well! And a while later some plays of Shakespeare also celebrate the love between man and woman...
So personally I presume the ideal of a marriage out of love at least coexisted next to the ideal of marriage of convenience. ... I hope my English makes sense.
