Random Gods - Hades, Pluto Picture

Here we have the god of death and the underworld: Hades. The Romans called him Pluto, which means "the rich one", because he possessed the hidden treasures of the earth, the fecund seed that must die before it can be "born again" and rise up through the soil to become a fruitful harvest. During this time, he would lose his wife, Persephone, to her mother, the goddess Demeter. While the world blossomed, he sat in sadness alone. After the harvest, she would return to him during the months when nothing grew.
