Prelude To A Monster Picture

For this piece I wanted to depict the character of Medusa in a form she's rarely seen in, as a mortal woman, before she's turned into the monster we've all heard so much about. Upon researching the character I became quite taken with the history of Medusa as told in Ovid's Metamorphosis. In the story, Medusa, a young virgin and mortal woman, is worshiping in the temple of Athena when she is found and raped by Poseidon. Although SHE was the victim, Athena blamed Medusa for the sacrilegious act, punishing her by changing her loveliest feature, her hair, into snakes and giving her the destructive power to turn anyone who looks directly at her into stone. Once you take all this into consideration, I think we can agree that this poor woman got a raw deal and a pretty bad rep considering most don't know the whole story.
