Variant Flag of Cyprus Picture

Part of a series exploring what might occur if all the nations of Europe decided to adopt brand new flags.

In Greek mythology, the seashell is the symbol of Aphrodite, who was born on the island of Cyprus. In the modern world, the seashell is most famously associated with Aphrodite in Botticelli’s 1486 painting ‘The Birth of Venus’, where the Goddess stands on a seashell.

The scallop shell is also a symbol of baptism in Christianity, so the flag can also be said to represent a hope for a rebirth and reunification of the island following the 1974 Turkish invasion of Northern Cyprus.
