In Finnish mythology, the ferryman (or the ferrywoman in this case) is called Tuonen tytti/ Tuonen piika ("maid of the Netherworld") or Manalan neito ("maiden of the Underworld").

When I learned this, it stroke me as somewhat peculiar, since usually in most mythologies where this character occurs, the ferryman is seen as an old man or a male "demon" (at least in those I'm familiar with).

While reading about her, I instantly pictured a small, youngish woman standing alone in an old wooden boat, traversing endlessly through the waters of the river Styx/ the river of the Underworld. But then I thought that she should have some company (other than all the dead she carries through the river), and of course, that companion had to be a dog.
