Birth of Yggdrasil Picture

"Birth of Yggdrasil"
6" x 12"
screen print on BFK Reeves
edition of 9

This is the secondin a series of prints i made for my screen printing graduate course. My series focuses on illustrations of mythology.

The assignment for this print was an abstract/landscape. Rather than choosing one or the other, I incorporated my idea into an abstract landscape. The subject matter of this piece deals with the Norse creation theory. In this legend, the frost giants ruled the universe lead by their kind, Ymir. Odin and his brothers eventually kill Ymir. Odin then uses Ymir's blood, bones, and body to give birth to the tree of the world, Yggdrasil. Yggdrasil connects Midgard, the world of humans, to the underworld and Asgard, the land of the gods.

I am pretty unexperienced in abstract art, but I embraced this challenge going into it. I'm really pleased with the outcome and I wouldn't mind doing a couple different variations of it in the future.
