Tartarus Picture

In Greek mythology, Tartarus is both a deity and a place in the underworld even lower than Hades reserved for punishing the worst sinners. According to The Iliad (c. 700), Tartarus is "as far beneath Hades as heaven is high above the earth." It is a dank and wretched pit engulfed in murky gloom. .. where the evil were punished after death for having offended the gods.

I've presented Tartarus with the glow of hell-fire rather than the dank and murky gloom described in Greek mythology but I think I'll chalk that up to "artistic license"...
