Rising from the Ashes Picture

8.5" x 11" colored pencil and ballpoint pen on paper. August 14, 1999. The phoenix appears in the mythology of ancient races from Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. The myths vary slightly, but they all include the old phoenix dying in a burst of flame, with the new phoenix rising out of the ashes. Few themes are spread around so many parts of the world at the same period of history. The joining of death and rebirth in the legend of the phoenix has always appealed to me. Here, I've combined that theme with the rainbow theme from the Bible, where the rainbow marked God's promise at the end of the Flood. The theme is similar, but involves water instead of flame. Life on earth was wiped out by flooding, and began again on the slopes of Mount Ararat.
