The Selkie Picture

For a project in my daily art class, everyone was required to create a series of five "artist trading cards" to share with another class. Each card was supposed to contain an original piece of artwork of whatever you wanted, and each artist was to create a series of five that all contain a recurring theme. My theme was faeries, since I'm really interested in folklore and things revolving around fae and such. This card reflects the myth of the Selkie -- a faerie that took the form of a seal most days, but shed its seal skin to become human every full moon. It is said that if someone were to take the Selkie's skin after they've shed it, that Selkie would be eternally attached to them until they could get their skins back.
