Andromeda Picture

In Greek mythology, Andromeda is the daughter of Cepheus, an Aethiopian king, and Cassiopeia. When Cassiopeia's hubris leads her to boast that Andromeda is more beautiful than the Nereids, Poseidonsends a sea monster, Cetus, to ravage Aethiopia as divine punishment. Andromeda is stripped and chained naked to a rock as a sacrifice to sate the monster, but is saved from death by Perseus and later she marry him. As a subject, Andromeda has been popular in art since classical times; it is one of several Greek myths of a Greek hero's rescue of the intended victim of an archaic Hieros gamos (sacred marriage), giving rise to the "princess and dragon" motif. From the Renaissance, interest revived in the original story, typically as derived from Ovid's account.

A clarification: the myth says that Andromeda was the princess of Ethiopia, but in ancient times the term was used very loosely and could also indicate the Middle East, in particular Palestine and Red Sea's coast. In fact, the myth says that Andromeda was chained on the shores of Joppa (Jaffa), now part of Tel Aviv. That's why, unlike some authors of DeviantArt (but similarly to others), I have shown Andromeda as Caucasian. I want to clarify that historical accuracy is the one and only reason that prompted me to do this.
