The tribute to Papatūānuku, who originated in Māori mythology, is inspired by feminine half of the primal couple Rangi and Papatuanuku who appear in a creation myth explaining the origin of the world. In many Māori creation traditions, Papatūānuku emerged from under water. She represents a mother earth figure that gives birth to all things of the world and imparts many blessings to her children. She is seen as the birthplace of all things and the place to which they return.
