Alkonost Picture

This is Alkonost, one of the three legendary birds of Russian myth. She is the farthest from humans, as she never speaks to them. The reason for this is that her voice is the most beautiful in all of creation and thus all who hear it, motral or god, forget everything while listening, including who they are. She is afraid to speak because of this and no one who hears her song can remember it.

She represents the inner melancholy and beauty of the human soul. Her feathers are patterned white and blue. She lays eggs in shallow water off the coast and they hatch in seven days accompanied by a great storm. Alkonost is called the stormbringer as she has the power to call down intense storms and generally control the weather.

Made for my summer contract on Russian Mythology and Neo-Paganism.
