Pinch Pot: Narrative + Poetry Picture

Pinch Pot
Black under-glaze carved with a clear glaze coating

This was one of my earliest pieces in the course, and by far my favorite in terms of pure results. I tried to make something very spherical, and I did. It was heavier than I'd like, but for my first pinch pot that's to be expected.

We painted it with this black under-glaze stuff and then, per instructions, carved out a design that had a narrative to it. I chose some mildly occult/mythological imagery-- rabbit on the moon, surrounded by the sun/flower, and along the sides stanzas from three of my favorite poems. The inside I left black, with a single line of poetry.

WHAT IF A DAWN OF A DOOM OF A DREAM
BITES THIS UNIVERSE IN TWO,
PEELS FOREVER OUT OF HIS GRAVE
AND SPRINKLES NOWHERE WITH ME AND YOU?

ALL BY ALL AND DEEP BY DEEP
AND MORE BY MORE THEY DREAM THEIR SLEEP
ANYONE AND NO ONE EARTH BY APRIL
WISH BY SPIRIT AND IF BY YES

TEACH ME TO HEAR MERMAIDS SINGING
OR TO KEEP OFF ENVY'S STINGING
AND FIND WHAT WIND
SERVES TO ADVANCE AN HONEST MIND
