Life and Death Picture

This is a detailed black and white ink drawing depicting a goddess-like angel symbolizing Life (and the goddess Ishtar), and a skeletal corpse-like being symbolizing Death (and the goddess Ereshkigal). These two sister beings, and sister goddesses are the mirror images of each other, and so Life (Ishtar) bears a mirror in her right hand. In her left hand she presents a skull, which Death (Ereshkigal) is about to take. For Life always eventually must give Death its’ due. Such is the symbolic meaning of that gesture. In the background, a black sun burns, symbolizing the union of Life and Death to form Rebirth and thusly: new life.
