Monkey King Statue - 1 Picture

My favorite Monkey King statue. It is almost a foot tall not counting the staff. It weighs a ton! I believe it is made out of brass.

For those who don't know, the Monkey King is the main character of the internationally famous 16th century Chinese classic Journey to the West (1592 CE). It is about a stone monkey (you know who) who learns Taoist magic and becomes one of the most powerful demons in the cosmos. He is so strong that not even the entire heavenly army can defeat him. The Buddha eventually plays a trick on him and traps him under a mountain. After 500 years of imprisonment, the reformed monkey is released to protect a Buddhist monk on his way to India to receive scriptures needed to end the suffering of tortured souls in hell. Along the way, they meet up with other parties, and fight all sorts of nasty demons, spirits, and gods along the way. Some may be surprised to learn that Son Goku from the Dragon Ball series is based on the Monkey King. In fact, Son Goku is a transliteration of Monkey's religious name, Sun Wukong.
