Into the West Picture

"Into the West" -the title- was chosen for a few reasons. One was that the sun sets in the west which fits with the end of summer. Another was that the picture was taken in the west. The final was that in the song "Defying Gravity" Elphaba says that shes going to be flying free and to look for her in the western sky, and the foal is running free. Also, the title is a sort of irony with the picture. The west has -for centuries and longer- represented a kind of end. In ancient mythology, the west was the way to the underworld. So essentially, it could represent death, and yet in the picture there is a baby horse, a symbol of new life - with death comes life. With the death of summer comes the life of autumn and winter.
