Concordia & Pax-

Concordia, in ancient Roman religion, is the Roman deities">goddess who embodies harmony, or homonoia, in relationships and society.

She was often paired with Pax ("Peace") in representing an ideal society.

Notes:

The Roman month Februarius was named after the Latin februum, which means purification, from the purification ritual Februa held on February 15 (full moon) in the old lunar Roman calendar.

This was later incorporated into the Lupercalia, celebrating Lupa, the she-wolf who rescued Romulus and Remus.

Later traditions associated state stability, peace, and fertility with these rituals.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine's Day started as a Christian liturgical feast day for several saints named Valentinus.

The day became associated with romantic love with Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, with the romances of courtly love .

In 18th-century England, greeting cards (known as "valentines"), became a new tradition.

In Europe, Saint Valentine's Keys are given as a symbol to unlock the person's heart, and to children, in order to ward off epilepsy .

Brief Rant:

Valentine’s Day over-emphasizes the romances from the troubadours.

The sense of community, in the festival has been lost; unless, you argue that communities are built on exclusion, rather than inclusion.

Maybe, the time for state religions has passed. Maybe, the government should stay out of the bedrooms of the country, as Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau [Mark I], said decades ago; as well as its churches, synagogues, cathedrals, temples, mosques, basilicas, and sacred sites.

Marriage is a partnership contract, and should be treated as such. Regardless of whatever religious rituals people may choose to solemnize and symbolize their partnership.

Those who share their lives and the places they live with someone else are entering into a de facto marriage contract, as the law unevenly recognizes; and, they deserve the benefits and protections of those who have the sanction of earlier, state religions and statutes.

No doubt, most people don't realize that someone can live with someone all their adult lives; and, still be denied the tax and insurance benefits and protections afforded to others who do the same.

Whether someone is a serial monogamist, polygamist, practices polyandry, or is part of a blended family, as so many are, or whatever domestic arrangements; or, simply shares their life and residence because of disability; don't people deserve to be treated equally, with respect?

Regretfully, I've known too many who have been denied such benefits and protections; and, in Canada, watched them disappear, with the stroke of a pen, and cutbacks, made by some politician far away, living their own life, and going home to whomever they may.

It’d be nice to believe that we’re evolving into a more civil and environmentally responsible society, to pass on to those who come after is.

Although, it may not always be evident, as health and life insurance officers, lawyers, and some politicians, fight the tides of humanity;

But, it would still be nice to believe.

Notes:

[1] Pax was depicted with olive branches, a cornucopia, and/ or a scepter.

[2] Concordia was depicted sitting, wearing a long cloak and holding onto a patera (sacrificial bowl), a cornucopia (symbol of prosperity), or a caduceus (symbol of peace).

She was often shown in between two other figures, such as standing between two members of the Imperial family shaking hands.

She was associated Pax and Salus, or Securitas and Fortuna.

Reading:

The Four Loves is a book by C. S. Lewis which explores the nature of love, through thought experiments.[1]

The book was based on a set of radio talks from 1958; and, was criticised in the US at the time for its frankness about sex.[2]

1-Storge—empathy bond

2-Philia—friend bond

3-Eros—erotic bond

4-Agape—unconditional 'God' love

I had thought all we needed was logic and intelligence;

-Logic is the beginning of wisdom not the end

But, that doesn’t seem to be getting us far enough, fast enough, towards a more stable and sustainable society.
