The Lovers Picture

The Lovers, number 6 card of the Major Arcana Tarot. The Lovers represent a choice to be made and that choice is about love. The love of another, the love of work, family or any love of life. The Balinese story of Rama and Sita, the famous lovers of the Hindu epic, The Ramayana. They are shown here dancing under the Tree of Life, which is a Banyan tree. The tree is wrapped by the black and white cloth, known as kain poleng, it symbolizes the duality of nature, the good and evil. Rama and Sita have respectfully, the Sun and Moon on their foreheads, male and female, they dance as they have found love and yet have not made the decision to mate, to form a union. To give oneself up to love is to let go of the self, the ego-centered experience. The river forks, a choice on the path. The traditional Tarot shows an Angel, there are no angels in Balinese mythology and so a Widiadari is show, a heavenly nymph. She is the symbol of fate, destiny and of divine intervention and blessings.
