Lillie's Secret and the Aether foundation Picture

September Sixth is coming to its end here in America, and today will likely go down as the biggest news drop in pokemon history. Of course it is debatable whether the information was more or less than previous announcements, but what is totally clear is that this trailer has given us so much insight into Pokemon Sun and Moon, and yet left us puzzled with how this information "all comes together", and what it means for the future. This post is sure to be long so read it only if you dare.

Now I will start out by saying that I don't mean to tread out the standard speculation that the Aether foundation is the real evil team, I mean to go deeper, if I can. So let's begin

Three trailers were released today, and all of them had different new footage, with the Japanese trailer being (arguably) the most enigmatic and intriguing trailer ever created for a pokemon game. This intrigue centers around the Ultra Beast known as UB-01 that was featured briefly at the end of the trailer, and left the audience with their jaws dropped much like the characters in the game who were witnessing it. I must admit that on looking at this further the concept of Ultra Beast (what little we know about them and what the implications are) scares me. It seems fundamentally alien to pokemon, and I believe that was the intention. However, on first glance, it was so intriguing that even if it fundamentally changes how we define pokemon, I want to know about it. Now just on the off chance that this is a reference to Lilo and Stitch, I will leave the reference here to the experiments created by Jumba Jookiba, one of which was Stitch (#626) similar to how these Ultra Beast are known only by number (ex. UB-01).

All jokes aside, the question need be raised, what is UB-01? It looks like a Jellyfish. Jellyfish have no brain and yet function autonomously. It looks like Lillie. Lillie is a girl. Ultra Beasts are not pokemon....

Stating the facts doesn't really seem to get us closer to an answer, but we shall start with these and see what we can expound out of it.

"In the Alola region, rumors are flying about mysterious creatures known as Ultra Beasts. Ultra Beasts possess mighty powers and could pose a threat to humans and Pokémon, so they are feared.

It appears that the Aether Foundation is also conducting research on these Ultra Beasts.

According to rumor, multiple Ultra Beasts exist, each of them called by a code name."

"
UB-01’s body is composed of a glass-like substance. However, it’s constantly changing shapes, never settling on one.

While evidence of something like a survival instinct can be observed in UB-01, no one knows whether it has a will of its own or any emotions. It’s said that, for some reason, its movements resemble those of a young girl."

So after looking at the facts as they stand, what can we come away with? Again, that it is Cnidarian-esque is fairly apparent, "no one knows if it has a will of it's own" Similarly the debate as to whether Jellyfish are just moving stomachs or conscious organisms is ongoing. Jellyfish have proven to be a subject of much interest to science as they have yielded not only achievements in our understanding of the ocean, but also innovation in many fields, such as medicine and technology. This would explain why the Aether foundation is studying them. We might say that UB-01 represents unlimited potential. But that still leaves open a few questions. 1.) The official description clearly references the blatant similarity in the appearance of UB-01 and Lillie, our main character who has a mysterious secret and is working with Kukui for unknown reasons, but what is their connection? I mean for god's sake, at the bottom of this picture where the two are compared side by side you can see that the lower arms of Ub-01 look exactly like Lillie's legs, and the hat and the color are just further indications that they are related. 2.)"Creatures called Ultra Beasts" This description suggests that UB-01 is not the only Ultra Beast, so what are the others, and how do they fit into our understanding of anything we thought we knew about pokemon sun and moon or pokemon in general?

I shall start by saying that I do not believe that this Ultra Beast is Lillie. It is true that in the clip where the players marvel at UB-01's arrival, Lillie, who is supposed to be one of your traveling companions, is noticeably absent. Before we jump to conclusions and say that this necessarily means that she is UB-01, let's look at the other information we have.

That Lillie is a human seems fairly apparent. From the many lines of dialogue we've seen her say, to the fact that she literally walks around with the player, battles them, and carries a purse, I think it is clear that she is a human being. I think it would be a stretch to have one of your rivals who receives the other starter (in fact the one the main rival chooses) being an unknown alien entity. But why does it look like her then? I am not quite sure, but I will tell you the inferences that I think we can draw from this trailer.

It seems very clear that Lusamine, Lillie, and Gladion are related to each other. If I had to guess I would say they are all siblings, with Lillie being the youngest and Lusamine being the oldest. Perhaps these three siblings are all inheritors of the Aether Foundation and it's legacy, and each of them chose separate paths. Lusamine chose to be the president of the foundation and work to gather pokemon from all over the world in their paradise (that doesn't sound fishy at all). Gladion chose to pursue strength and joined up with team skull. Not because he believes in what they stand for, but because his sole ideal is strength. Lillie chose not to associate herself with either the foundation or Team skull, and what she is pursuing is not exactly clear, although we can say for certain that she wants pokemon to be happy and not get hurt. Perhaps these three siblings represent three ends of a spectrum; the want to control pokemon, the want to make them strong, and the want to be friends with them. Three siblings, three ideals, three games (RBG), and three starters; It all comes together. But that may be jumping ahead too far, let me explain my thought processes further.

"
The Aether Foundation works in the Alola region. The foundation’s goal is to care for Pokémon that have been hurt.

The Aether Foundation has constructed an artificial island called Aether Paradise. There, they not only provide shelter for Pokémon, but also conduct various research projects. It seems that the main character will also be able to visit Aether Paradise during the adventure."

The Aether foundation wants to bring pokemon from all over the world to their paradise where they will be treated well (at least in theory). They also take a heavy interest in science conducting various research experiments on the pokemon, or at least that seems to be the implication. Lillie, perhaps the most open minded individual of the three saw that the Aether foundation is a fraud, that they claim to want to help injured pokemon and give them a paradise to live in, but in reality want to conduct experiments on them for their own ambition's glorification. This leads to another revelation in the trailer, and that is Type: Null. Perhaps the most peculiar pokemon I've ever seen, it is said to have been artificially created.

"This Pokémon wearing a mask has been dubbed “Null,” meaning nothing.

The shapes of its front and hind legs are clearly different. The reason is that Type: Null was constructed to synthesize the strengths of various Pokémon, enabling it to adapt to any situation.

The mask fitted to Type: Null’s head is a piece of equipment designed to control its latent powers. It’s extremely heavy, so it also serves to hinder Type: Null’s agility.

To complete a certain mission, there was need of a Pokémon powerful enough to rival those Pokémon often spoken of in mythology."

My prediction is of course that the Aether foundation created Type: Null through experimenting on the pokemon in their care. Now the mask is another point of interest. This pokemon was meant to utilize the strengths of all pokemon, and to aid in a mission where it would rival the mythical pokemon (we can assume here that we're talking about Solgaleo and Lunala). At some point in the past the Aether foundation created Type: Null to beat Solgaleo or Lunala, and control them. They failed at this for unknown reasons, and then Type: Null was just sitting around. But this incredibly powerful pokemon, that most likely harbored animosity towards its creators was too powerful, and so in much the same way as Giovanni built the armor to control Mewtwo's power, so too did Aether build the mask for Type: Null. But where does Gladion come into this? Gladion is concerned only with power and strength, so it is conceivable that being an inheritor of the Aether foundation he knew about Type: Null and stole it to train it and explore its true strength and potential (which will eventually culminate in him removing the mask). That's a good bit of speculation about Type: Null, barring its possible connections with Arceus which would take ages to hash out, so let's move on.

Lillie, believing that both her siblings were wrong in what they pursued ran away. The Aether foundation spent fortunes trying to find her but never could, and she was presumed to be dead (perhaps Kukui heard her story and hid her (at her request) from the Aether investigators.)
The president of the Aether Foundation, whether it be Lillie's father, or Lusamine decided to try and create Lillie anew, (similar to how the team rocket scientist was trying to recreate his daughter as a clone after she died) using genetic experiments on pokemon. Unfortunately, what is created is not a clone of Lillie, but a monstrosity known as an Ultra Beast, it being the first attempt and closest equivalent to Lillie, the others, presumably housed on Aether paradise are of like monster qualities. In a sense this is what pokemon has always been about; humans and pokemon living side by side as equals, and the desire of some humans to step beyond the bound of nature and cooperation to control pokemon that they themselves have created. From Giovanni, Team Rocket and Mewtwo, to Ghetsis, Team Plasma, and Genesect. The funamental question is what it means to be a pokemon, and what these artificial creations really are.

That is a theory, am I right?
Let me know, what you think. But before I go I want to leave you with just a few more thoughts...
Team Skull are not the good guys, they steal pokemon and money, however, this does not mean that the Aether foundation are not the bad guys. It struck everyone as odd that Guzma and his gangsters would be after Solgaleo and Lunala, because why would they. They don't show any ambition or need or want to do such a thing. The Aether foundation on the other hand, seems a prime candidate. As I see it, Type: Null was created to take down Solgaleo or Lunala, it was either created by team skull or the Aether foundation, now ask yourself which seems more likely. Then there is a similarity I noticed between the logo of the Delta Episode and the logo of the Aether foundation, but that's enough about that. Finally, I will say that I am truly happy that Zygarde is going to feature prominently in these games, and my theory as to how he will fit in is this: The player will collect all the cores and cells, and by the end of the game have a zygarde, and this will be the only pokemon capable of taking down the mythological pokemon Solgaleo or Lunala once the Aether Foundation foolishly summons it. After all Zygarde is the order pokemon, and order over life and death certainly makes it a worthy opponent of Solgaleo or Lunala.
