Helen of Troy Picture

Helen of Troy. The most beautiful mortal woman in the Ancient Greek world.

A golden apple arrives at Thetis and Peleus's wedding with instructions to be given to the prettiest goddess. Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite begin arguing about who should receive it. Wanting to stop the argument, Zeus has Paris, a prince of Troy, decide which goddess should get the apple. Hera tells him that if he gives her the apple she will make him king of all of Asia. Athena assures him that she will make him the wisest of men if she is given the prize. Aphrodite promises Paris to give him the most beautiful woman in the world if he awards her the golden Apple of Discord. So, Paris gives Aphrodite the apple and runs off to spirit away Helen of Troy, wife of Menelaus of Sparta, starting the ten year long Trojan War...

So, my grandmother sent me some oil pastels and this was me trying them out. (You don't want to see my first drawing with them of Eurydice and Hermes...) I'm quite pleased with this. The shading in the picture I referenced this from was a bit strange, so it might look weird here.

Referenced from a picture of Helen happily combing her hair while people kill each other in the background from D'aulaires' Book of Greek Myths
