Heikagani crab Picture

The Heikagani crab is a Japanese crab which bears a shell which looks like a human face, or mask, local legends tell that they are reincarnations of spirits Heike warriors that fell in the battle of Dan-no-ura.
Another story tells that crabs which look most like samurai warriors are thrown back by fishermen in respect of the fallen warriors.

This is another speedpaint on the subject of Japanese mythology and folklore. It's so inspiring I felt that the mythology would be a good place for me to start my daily paintings.

This took about an hour over a couple of hours to paint, most of that time was spent looking through images of the crabs and various masks as reference.
