Baba Yaga in Her Mortar Picture

This was made for the Coaching & Mentoring Competition held by CRPhotomanipulation. The group's mentors were LiliaOsipova, Wesley-Souza, and Iskander1989. During the competition my teammates and I worked to further our knowledge of composition, perspective, color, light/shadows, and embelishment. The theme for this final manipulation is Villains of Mythology.

Villain: Baba Yaga
Origin: Eastern Europe

In Slavic folklore, Baba Yaga is a supernatural being (or one of a trio of sisters of the same name) who appears as a deformed and/or ferocious-looking woman. Baba Yaga flies around in a mortar, wields a pestle, and dwells deep in the forest in a hut usually described as standing on chicken legs (or sometimes a single chicken leg). Baba Yaga may help or hinder those that encounter or seek her out. She sometimes plays a maternal role, and also has associations with forest wildlife. According to Vladimir Propp's folktale morphology, Baba Yaga commonly appears as either a donor or villain, or may be altogether ambiguous. (…)

Each member of the group had a theme from Baba Yaga tales. My task was to illustrate her soaring in her mortar while the others had to show Baba Yaga and Ivan Zareich (Energiaelca1), Baba Yaga and Vasilisa (marphilhearts), Baba Yaga from "The Magic Swan Geese" (LeenaHill), and Baba Yaga's house (lolyweb).
