Penelope Picture

Penelope was the daughter of Icarius, a Spartan prince, and the wife of the king of Ithaca, Odysseus. When Odysseus went to fight in the Trojan Wars, Penelope found herself pressed by suitors to take a new husband; however she kept faith that her husband was still alive and would come home. She said that she would take a new husband once she had completed weaving the death shroud of Laertes, her father-in-law. By day she would work on the weaving, and by night destroy the progress that she had made, thus never finishing it.
