Ka'elele O Kalani Picture

Thank you cousin and thank you to all you people on Facebook who helped me translate the title to my painting!

The title means "The Heavenly Messenger" and to everyone out there who support Hawaiian culture this is for you.

This is an Io Hawk found only on the Big Island of Hawaii. In Ancient Hawaiian culture the Io Hawk was a symbol of Royalty and a messenger of the Gods. So with the recent protesting of the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mount Mauna Kea on the Big Island. I decided to do a bit of fun by putting the Io Hawk at night flying by the mountain itself.

Now Mauna Kea means 'White Mountain' in Hawaiian because it is one of three mountains that are covered with snow. The other being Haleakala and Mauna Loa. Mauna Loa being the worlds most active volcano.

Now the background was done with an airbrush. I wanted to see what I could do with that old airbrush that my dad had given me. The bird in the foreground was a combination of acrylic paint and airbrushing. I just wanted to do something different that reflects my culture as well as show how much the Io means to the Hawaiian people.

So there you have it folks a new picture that deviates from Project Icarus but it means alot to me. As I am Native Hawaiian myself so I hope you like it folks it goes a long way into trying out new media.

Oh before I forget when I took this photo my signature got cut out so don't even think of stealing it!
