I told Ario that his jacket is to Baldwin what Kaneda's motorcycle was to him. Riddled in funky random regalia.

Baldwin was partly an exercise in portraying the early 1970's proto-punks, my favorite personalities from the movement (Iggy Pop, Joe Strummer, John Lydon, etc.), poor but educated, cynical but optimistic, indulgent but compassionate and self-aware.

Baldwin was named after one of the iconic heroes of Norse mythology. As well the linguistics of his name translate into english as "good friend" or "protector". The deliberately goofy ass name was a self imposed hurdle, a means of further establishing the character--not in spite of his name---but rather as a means of making the character more mercurial and personalized. He's no one else but...Baldwin. Even his actual first name, you'll find in the film, fits him less than his bizarre last name. When I discovered his first name, as the writer, it put a bad taste in my mouth.
