Neil Gaiman's Death for a Ten Ton Studios Weekly Sketch Contest. This was all done in ink and Copics, with a little white pencil. I wanted add a bit of depth to this image. On the surface it should appear to be a quiet moment that finds Gaiman's popular representation of Death sitting atop a tree stump, as a buttlerfly approaches. However, on a deeper level, there are numerous mythological references to the soul as represented by the butterfly. And if we look just a bit closer at the stump, it is very much dead, with its gnarled root structure appearing somewhat labyrinthine and visceral, perhaps even intenstinal. Death rises to consume the unprepared soul.
