Leuce, or Leuka, was a sea nymph in Greek Mythology who was transformed into a poplar tree. When Heracles wore a wreath of poplar leaves, the sides which touched his head became white and glossy from his sweat.

Pictured here is the Poplar Hawk Moth, whose larvae feed on the leaves of the tree.

Biology devours mythology.
