archaeologists believe that the legend of the cyclops stems from seeing skulls of elephants. The large hole at the center almost looks like an eye socket rather than an opening for the trunk to come from. This would also explain the supposed great size of the cyclops in mythology.

For me, trying to do a cyclops means sorting out how the face would actually come together. Ignoring issues like stereoscopic vision, I think this is what a one-eyed humanoid would look like if they had a human skull.
