Although it is true that female characters in Greek mythology tend to be meek and submissive, there are notable exceptions to this precedent. Hippolyta was a Queen of the Amazons, a warrior race of women, descended from Ares, the god of war. According to myth, this nation of all female warriors lived in a society devoid of all males. They would sometimes meet with men of other nations to create future generations, to raise only the girls, killing the boys. They were flagrant sexists themselves and unfortunately were used to demonize outspoken, independent women.
